It All Started with a Casual Chat

The ShiftMatch Story

In the early 2000s, Benny Hartz—founder of Gate 121—was building a permission-based marketing platform that used intelligent matching logic. At that BBQ, he spoke with a nurse manager who described the painful, manual process of filling shifts: calling down a handwritten list of preferred casuals, relying on luck more than logic. Some staff got most of the work simply because they appeared in more contact books.

That conversation sparked a realisation: the matching engine already built for marketing could be repurposed for workforce allocation. After months of collaboration with an Area Health Service in northern Sydney—mapping out the complex requirements of healthcare scheduling—Cascom was born in 2004.

Cascom became the first web-based automated staff allocation solution designed specifically for casual healthcare. It was quickly recognised with industry awards for improving efficiency and was a game-changer for nurse managers who finally had a fairer, faster way to fill vacant shifts.

As the solution evolved, so did its vision. Recognising that the challenge of filling shifts was not limited to healthcare, the team expanded their focus to create a platform adaptable across industries. To reflect this broader purpose, Cascom rebranded as ShiftMatch in 2015.
